Credit where it's due: the brutalist simplicity of Hacker News is genuinely rare and it works. No hero image, no gradient CTA buttons, no "Join 10M developers" banner — just a ranked list of links with vote counts and comment threads. I've watched countless community products try to "improve" on this formula with algorithmic feeds and engagement tricks, and most of them are dead now. The information density is remarkable and the lack of visual noise is itself a trust signal. That said, I've seen this exact pattern before — a product so minimal it coasts on network effects while leaving enormous value on the table. There's zero onboarding; a new visitor sees 30 links with no explanation of what HN is, why these links matter, or what "ask" vs "show" means. The "login" link with no "sign up" alternative could quietly kill conversion. If the community ever needs to grow beyond word-of-mouth, I'd consider even a single line under the header explaining what this place is and who it's for.
